Not exactly. I have been considering what we talked about a little while ago--I am still hesitant to use our technology for the sake of weaponry, but I decided I would at least want to attempt a few experiments.
In short, I need crystals, or the equivalent. Stones which generate or invoke magic. But not only am I not sure where to find them, I doubt I could venture out on my own without meeting utter disaster. That would be where the rest of you come in.
I can source my own spare parts, I have resources enough for that. It's the getting around and searching for viable power sources that is a little more of a problem.
An alarming question I did not consider. Not knowing what you anticipate finding, I will say volatility is not strictly an issue. Such things can be refined into a more stable condition with some effort.
The unrefined stones we initially built the technology around could explode violently if jostled a little too hard. This was a problem for some time until we found a method to refine and stabilize them into a more solid crystal form.
We're engineers, not reckless Academy students. It was not particularly difficult to work with them given the correct application of caution. The refinement was a necessity born of the desire for more widespread use of the technology.
Caleb, I am a professional engineer with a doctorate and the co-inventor of technology powered by magic. If I were doing something legitimately dangerous, I would at least take safety precautions.
[i can not stress enough that he was planning highly unethical elf-experimentation at his canonpoint.]
That is rather the thing--he nearly did. Not strictly through any fault of his own, but one of them was knocked about and accidentally blew a hole in the wall.

He was keeping them in a box.
In his apartment.
His apartment, Caleb.
